STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — For many years, Angela Gaudioso-Klein, 58, would wake up wondering how she would deal with the chronic pain she’d been battling since her 20s.
“Every day I couldn’t get out of bed not in pain. Every day it felt like someone beat my feet with a baseball bat,” said Gaudioso-Klein.
These ailments didn’t sit well with the career hairstylist who was always on her feet.
“I suffered with chronic pain for well over 25 years. …I have stenosis, fibromyalgia, and neuropathy in my feet,” she said. “The pain medication left me with a damaged liver. …I felt too young to feel this old.”
She tried many different conventional treatments, to no avail. She even tried medical marijuana.
“With my pain management doctor we even exhausted medical marijuana, and we could never seem to come up with the right formula that would help me. It was costing me a fortune,” said Gaudioso-Klein.
That’s when her pain management specialist “threw her hands up” and said, “go find some CBD oil,” which is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant.
Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which also comes from cannabis, it is not psychoactive – so it’s not supposed to get you high. But CBD, a naturally occurring compound, has been found to free people from nagging chronic pain, stress and anxiety.
“I knew nothing about it. I reached out on Facebook, and I found a brand that started to help me,” said Gaudioso-Klein.
She was hooked — in a good way.
“Suddenly, three weeks after taking CBD oil, my neuropathy was gone. I could walk without being in pain,” said Gaudioso-Klein. “I had been in horrific pain from the bottom of my feet. I said to myself, ‘There’s something to this’.”
It wasn’t long before she decided to manufacture and market her own CBD oil. She launched her business, Heavenly Hemp CBD Oil LLC, on April 1.
“I have it grown organically in Oregon and Kentucky,” said Gaudioso-Klein. “There are no chemicals used whatsoever. The only ingredients in my bottle come from the hemp plant.”
IT’S NOT MARIJUANA
Hemp and marijuana look alike — they are “cousins,” said Gaudioso-Klein.
“They are members of the same plant family, cannabis, but they belong to different strains,” she explained.
“Hemp is part of the Sativa classification and is typically taller with long narrow leaves, while marijuana belongs to the Indica strain and looks squatter and more bush like, with broader leaves and closely packed branches. One very important difference is that hemp and marijuana contain drastically different amounts of CBD’s and THC,” she added.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Most people try CBD oil for pain or anxiety.
“It works on our central and peripheral nervous system. What comes from that plant is supposed to bring balance back into our nervous system,” she said.
“A lot of people say they get a wonderful night’s sleep; it gives you a more restful sleep,” said Gaudioso-Klein. “A lot of that is associated with people suffering from pain. If you’re not feeling well, you’re not going to get a good night’s sleep.”
The product is “purely hemp extract” sold in liquid form.
“I’m not into making candies and having artificial flavors in there. …The best way to take it is a drop under your tongue,” she said.
“I tell everyone to start out with five drops in the morning and five drops at night. I give them a card about how to increase over seven weeks. I tell them to pay attention to their body, because we are all different,” added Gaudioso-Klein.
She said she also encourages her clients to keep a journal.
“I tell them to log it down on a little calendar, and when they start to feel better — whether their pain is diminished, or they are sleeping better — write it down,” said Gaudioso-Klein.
“Some people say they feel the results in a few weeks. …Anything holistic takes time,” she added, noting her products are available for purchase on her website.
